King’s Chair IV
41 x 32 x 63 inches
King’s Chair IV is a high-backed chair with a unique, distinctive design. It is the last in a series of four models the designer designated as “King’s Chairs”. This piece encompasses a symbolic meaning as well as incorporating ergonomic design characteristics. Prehistoric forms of “chairs” probably evolved within the concept of “elevating” certain individuals in primitive societies by allowing them to sit higher than the others on stools, chairs, and eventually thrones. By virtue of its design, King’s Chair IV lends contemporary aesthetics and meaning to this ancient symbolism. King’s Chair IV is made of American Black walnut, laminated and carved with a chain saw and sanded. The finish is hand-rubbed oil and varnish.

Flame Rocking Chair
60 x 27 x 38 inches
The rocker Flame incorporates a strikingly aesthetic, dynamic design as an ergonomically conceived rocking chair. The visual and tactile appeal of the work communicates a sensual value in the observer, inviting him to engage with the piece. Incorporating curves, cantilevers, negative spaces, and linear design elements, tension and movement are found simultaneously in Flame. The chair balances in a middle position when in use and rocks gently through changes in weight. Flame is constructed of laminated plywood. The thin 1/8” to 3/16” layers of lamination ensure that the wood will no longer expand or contract. Simultaneously, this technique creates a unique visual appearance and allows the construction of this complicated form with a maximum of strength and relative minimum of material. Flame is made of Pine/Spruce/Fir 1 ¾” plywood cut to the envisioned contours or patterns on a band saw. The designer then re-glues these layers to the approximate form and uses a chain saw to remove excess material and refine the design. The rough shape is then sanded by hand and machine to the final rocking chair.
