If Memory Serves
This mock magazine design, consisting of four spreads, is inspired by the malleability of memory. Outside influences, as well as our own tendency to create a narrative of our experiences, make memory not an entirely reliable source of the truth. Utley manipulated old photographs with repetition, blur, and colored overlays to represent the ways in which our memory can recall events differently than how they actually occurred. The designer also used several different typefaces for the letter E in the headlines and pull quotes to give the same effect. The disconnected groups of text, offset rectangles and smashed leading were used to create feelings of tension and confusion.
